
Qi Jiang
is an award-winning teacher, dancer and choreographer. After graduating
from the Yinchuan Dance School and Beijing Dance
Academy in China, Mr. Jiang performed with the Yinchuan Song and Dance
Ensemble, Beijing National Song and Dance Ensemble, and the National
Ballet of China. In 1980, Mr. Jiang earned the top prize in China's
National Dance Competition and earned the title of Premiere Artist from
the Chinese government in 1985. After his arrival in the U.S., Mr. Jiang
danced with the Joffrey Ballet Concert Group and Twyla Tharp Dancer in
New York, then joined Ballet West in 1986 as a soloist and was promoted
to principal dancer in 1988. He has performed leading roles in many
classic and contemporary works, and has served as guest dancer, teacher
and choreographer for companies and schools around the world, including
the Hong Kong Ballet, Guangzhou Ballet (in China), Singapore Dance
Theater, Toshiko Sato of Japan, Cincinnati Ballet, Balletmet, Pacific
Northwest Ballet, Beijing Dance Academy, Hong Kong Jean M Wong Ballet
School, Shanghai Dance Academy, Joffrey Ballet School, Alaska Dance
Theater, Metropolitan Ballet of Dallas, Utah Ballet, Utah Regional
Ballet, Mount Holyoke Dance Ensemble and Joffrey Midwest Workshop. Mr.
Jiang was Ballet Master of Ballet West from 1999 to 2001, and joined the
College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati Dance
Division as an Associate Professor and Artistic Director of Ballet in
2001. Mr. Jiang has served as a dance panelist for the National
Endowment for the Arts. He has also served as an adjudicator for the
Ohio Choreography Competition and Guangzhou Ballet Dancers' Competition.
His recent
choreographic works for Dance China NY include "The Dream of Red
Chamber", "Some Seasons", When the Leaves Turn", "Wu/Wu", "Morning
Song", and "Mountain and Water." He was recently invited to guest
choreograph and teach for Guangzhou Ballet of China, Shanghai Dance
Academy, and Singapore Ballet Theater. He is also commissioned to
create a new musical production of Mulan for the Cincinnati Children's
Theater.
An artist,
teacher, and choreographer who travels frequently between the United
States and China, Mr. Jiang is at home in both the Chinese and American
dance worlds. The combination of his roots in traditional Chinese dance
and his wide-ranging experience in the United States make him an ideal
candidate to interpret and evolve Chinese dance in the American context.
He has just recently joined NYCCC as the Artistic Director of Dance
China NY in June, 2005.
Mr. Jiang received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master
of Fine Arts from the University of Utah.
