Bei
Bei Gu, School Director, is a graduate of the Shanghai Dance Academy and is a
recognized master of the Chinese sword dance. Gu was a principal dancer with Shanghai Song
and Dance Company and is an elected member of the Professional Dancers Guild of China. She
has performed leading roles in countless dance operas, touring throughout Europe,
Australia, North America and China. In addition, she has performed with the Shanghai Silk
Dancers and the Red Silk Dancers. As a teacher, Gu has taught students in Sichuan Province
and the Xinjiang Autonomous region in China. She has taught extensively in the New York
City Pubic Schools and at the Louis Abrons Arts for Living Center at the
Henry Street Settlement. She has been teaching dancing and
choreographing for NYCCC and Dance China NY since 1986.
Yuezhen Hu is a graduate of the Shanghai Dance
Academy and an elected member of the Shanghai Dancers Guild. From 1966 - 1985, she was a
principal dancer with the Shanghai Song and Dance Company. She has toured throughout
Greece, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland with the Shanghai Cultural Arts Troupe and
before arriving in the United States in 1992, she was a resident teacher for the Shanghai
Song and Dance Company. Hu has been teaching at NYCCC since 1993.
Mingliang Lu began studying calligraphy with his father at the age of five. He
also studied carving, sculpture and engraving under the tutelage of renowned Shanghai
artists, including Zheng Chi Lai, Shu Xun Long and Wu Su Wei. In 1981, he was commissioned
to replicate a 1000% miniature scale model of Qing Pu Dai Guan Garden with 796 stone
sculptures, some as small as a grain of rice. Between 1980 - 1985, his sculptures were
exhibited in the U.S. and received wide-reaching acclaims. "Dawn," a creation
during this period, was enlarged into a 5.5-m tall sculpture now in permanent installment
in the Shanghai Hua Xin Garden. He continues to receive awards at various art shows in the
United States. Lu has been teaching at NYCCC since 2000.
Zhongqi Mao is a graduate of the Fujian Arts School and an elected member of the
Chinese Dancers Association. After graduating, he joined the Fujian Dance and Drama
Company where he was a principal dancer and instructor. While in China, Mao won numerous
regional and national awards. He has been a part of the NYCCC teaching staff since 2001.
Mei Yin Ng graduated from the Kwang-si Association Cultural Dance Division in
Malaysia. For several years she toured with the Kwang-si Asssociation Dance Company and
the Remote Control Production of Europe. Since coming to the United States, Ng has
furthered her studies at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio. She has been a guest teacher
at the National Arts Academy and the Dance Outreach program at City Center in New York.
She has been teaching at NYCCC since 1997.
Jing Wang is a graduate of the Mongolian Performing Arts
Academy specializing in the myriad styles of Chinese Han and ethnic
minority folk dance. Wang was a dancer with the China National Dance &
Drama Company and a principal dancer with the Splendid China Dance
Troupe in Shenzhen, China and Orlando, Florida. She frequently performs
with Dance China NY and has been on the teaching staff at New York Chinese
Cultural Center since 1998.
Yanhua Wang graduated from the Chinese Yunnan Medical University. After
graduating, she went onto China's Henan Province, where she trained intensively in the
technique of Chen Si Tai Qi Chuan. Since coming to America, Wang has trained many students
in the art of Kung Fu, which includes sword techniques and Tai Qi Chuan. In 2001 Wang was
awarded 2nd place in the New York International Kung Fu Competition in the categories of
Tai Qi and Double Sword.
Yiliang Wang is a graduate of the Dance Academy of the Shanghai Opera where she
specialized in Chinese classical and folk dance and is also an elected member of the
Chinese Dancers Association. After graduating, she went on to join the Shanghai Dance and
Drama Academy and the Shanghai Opera Company as a principal dancer with whom she toured
the United States and throughout Southeast Asia. Since coming to the United States, she
has performed with the Chinese Dance Company, Red Silk Dancers and the Shanghai Silk
Dancers. Wang has been teaching at NYCCC since 1989.
Hangdong Xu received seven years of comprehensive training at the Shanghai Dance
Academy. Upon graduating, he danced for several years as a principal dancer with the
Shanghai Song and Dance Company. For eight years, he was a dance instructor for the
Shanghai International Cultural Study Institute and the Shanghai Song and Dance Company.
In 1998, he performed the grand dance drama, "Small Dagger Society", in the
anniversary celebration of Hong Kong returning to China. One year later, he toured
Malaysia with the Cheng Yan International Company and performed in the Return to Macau
Celebration. A renowned dancer, he was invited to attend the 2000 Art Festival in Paris
where he performed in the grand dance drama, "Golden Dance with Silver Dresses".
Xu has been on the NYCCC teaching staff since 2000.
Siping Xu
began his
Peking Opera study with the Shandong Peking Opera Company in 1970. As a
student, he performed the leading roles in many modern opera
productions, often touring throughout China. Chosen as one of a select
few, he furthered his studies of Chinese opera under the guidance of
renowned opera master, Tien Zhen Fu. Xu also performed the leading roles
in many well known pieces of traditional Peking Opera, garnering top
prizes in numerous Chinese national competitions. Xu has been on the
NYCCC teaching staff since 1999.
Mei Yong graduated from the Inner Mongolia University's dance and
performance department in 1993, then joined the Inner Mongolia Song and Dance Troupe as a
principal dancer. That same year she joined the Splendid China Dance Troupe in Shenzhen.
Yong specializes in the various styles of Chinese Han and ethnic minority folk dance. She
has been teaching at NYCCC since 2001.
Liqiong Zhang began learning dance at age of five with the Shanghai Little Swan
Ballet Troupe with whom she performed frequently while in China. Zhang came to the United
States at age 13 to further her dance and performing arts studies. She is a graduate of
the Laguardia Performing Arts School and continues to study at NYCCC.
She recently joined Dance China NY as an apprentice dancer and has been teaching with NYCCC
since 2002.
Bin Zhai is a graduate of the
Shenyang Peking Opera Academy and performed as a principal artist with
the Shenyang Peking Opera Company. His specialties are in the
warrior and hualian roles. While in China, Bin received
first place in the Liaoning Province Performing Arts competition. He has
been on the NYCCC teaching staff since 2004.
Yuheng Zhuang is a graduate of the Shenyang Peking Opera Academy and is a
distinguished warrior actor from the Shenyang Peking Opera Company who studied with the
renowned Wanchun Li. His leading roles in "Real/Fake Monkey King" and
"Havoc in Heaven" are his most acclaimed. He has won several awards, including
the Liaoning Province Performing Artist Award and Shenyang Arts Festival Awards. While
with the Shenyang Peking Opera Company, he toured extensively to numerous countries.
Zhuang is also a member of the Chinese Theatre Artists Association and is the Chairman of
the Chinese Artists in America Association. He has been teaching at NYCCC since 2000.
Apprentice
Teachers
Tenner Chan
has been dancing since the age of 7. She began her first class at NYCCC
during the summer of 1999. She has been performing for recitals and
performances ever since. Tenner has been on the NYCCC teaching staff since
2003.
Susan Palm has been dancing and
performing with NYCCC since 1992, and joined NYCCC's teaching staff in
early 2005.
Jie Yang started dancing at Shanghai Little Swan Ballet Troupe at age 10 and
performed often with the Troupe. Since coming to the U.S., she has been dancing at Joffrey
Ballet School and at the New York Chinese Cultural Center. Jie is now a
part of the teaching staff at NYCCC and is an apprentice dancer with
Dance China NY.
Jiayan Yong started studying dance at age eight. She is a former member of
Shanghai Little Swan Ballet Troupe and performed with the troupe while in China. Currently
she is studying dance at the Joffrey Ballet School and NYCCC. Yong recently joined the
Chinese Dance Company as an apprentice dancer and is now a part of the teaching staff
at NYCCC.
