ARTS IN EDUCATION
The New York Chinese Cultural Center and
Dance China NY's performances and workshops for children have been
highly acclaimed by educators and students. Linking together lessons
in dance, music, movement, history, language, and culture, the programs
bring China to life. In the words of one educator, "not only
were the students entertained, they learned a great deal too".
This dance program, performed in
full traditional Chinese costumes, introduce students to Chinese
culture through language lessons, historical background, onstage
demonstrations and audience interaction.
The dances and narration illustrate and explain traits,
customs and patterns of Chinese life. Students are given
the tools to interpret the dance movements as expressions of
what people do, see and feel.

LION DANCE PLUS
This
45-minute program, including a demonstration/interactive
segment, introduces beloved Chinese performing arts pieces,
beginning with a lion dance, including an example from
Peking Opera featuring the popular Monkey King character, as
well as the Chinese ribbon dance.
Lecture/Demonstration
SILK, SWORDS AND FANS
Dancers in full traditional Chinese costumes explain,
demonstrate and perform with long silk banners, silk and
feather fans, handkerchiefs and swords, while taking
students on a journey that illustrates the use of these
props that stretches from folk tradition right through to
the ancient imperial court. The program includes four dance
excerpt and three demonstration segments reveal the origins
of these tradition, the impact ofhistorical events
on dance and the influence of living conditions on dance
forms.

Workshops
RIBBON / FAN DANCE WORKSHOPS
Students work with professional dancers to learn Chinese
ribbon or fan dance techniques. Drawing from the lesson,
students discover how movement evoke feelings and images;
how different movements are integrated and combined to
create new ones; and how to begin composing a group dance.
The 45-minute lesson includes learning Chinese hand gestures
and their symbolic meanings, stories about how Chinese
dances began and how they relate to everyday life, simple
Chinese language and vocabulary and dance routines for
groups and individuals. In an extended residency, students
can also learn a complete Chinese dance to perform for the
rest of the school. (Grades: K-12, Length: 45 minutes, Performers: 1+)
